Weight Loss Study Suggests Alternating Between “Fasting & Feasting” Helps Obese Individuals

A new weight loss study from the Karl-Franzens University of Graz in Austria claims starving the body one day and “feasting” the next helps overweight individuals shed pounds. An “Easy Regimen”?

Trial volunteers were allowed to consume extra food on feasting days; however, they still consumed fewer calories per week compared to those on ‘regular’ diets because of the fasting days.

“This is an easy regimen — no calculation of calories — and the compliance was very high,” said the study’s senior author, Frank Madeo, a professor of molecular biology at Karl-Franzens University of Graz.

The ADF diet has yet to be compared to other fasting diets. So far, the ADF diet does not appear to have detrimental immune system effects.

“The reason might be due to evolutionary biology,” Madeo noted. “Our physiology is familiar with periods of starvation followed by food excesses.”

Healthy Changes

Volunteers who fasted and feasted not only lost an average of 4.5% body weight over the month-long trial, they also enjoyed health benefits such as lowered cholesterol and a decreased risk of heart disease.

More research on the ADF diet is needed, however, as the long-term effects are not yet known. The diet can also be challenging to maintain:

“What if you want to exercise? What if you have a physically active job?
