Breakfast has long been hailed as the most important meal of the day. New research from the University of Bath suggests it is one of the keys to effective weight loss because it prepares the body for efficient carbohydrate burning. Promotes Fast Carb Burning During Exercise
Scientists from the University of Bath’s Department for Health worked with volunteers who ate porridge made with milk two hours before exercise versus those who fasted overnight. They found the participants who ate breakfast increased their carbohydrate burning abilities during exercise; they also digested and metabolized food consumed after exercise at a more efficient rate.
“This is the first study to examine the ways in which breakfast before exercise influences our responses to meals after exercise,” said Dr. Javier Gonzalez, a senior lecturer in the Department of Health and study co-author. “We found that, compared to skipping breakfast, eating breakfast before exercise increases the speed at which we digest, absorb and metabolize carbohydrates that we may eat after exercise.”
Increases Use Of Muscle Glycogen
Stored carbohydrates are also burned off during exercise when you eat breakfast, according to this research:
“We also found that breakfast before exercise increases carbohydrate burning during exercise, and that this carbohydrate wasn’t just coming from the breakfast that was just eaten, but also from carbohydrates stored in our muscles as glycogen,” noted Rob Edinburgh, a PhD student in the Department for Health and study co-author. “This increase in the use of muscle glycogen may explain why there was more rapid clearance of blood sugar after ‘lunch’ when breakfast had been consumed before exercise.
“This study suggests that, at least after a single bout of exercise, eating breakfast before exercise may ‘prime’ our body, ready for rapid storage of nutrition when we eat meals after exercise.”
The study was published in the American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism.
