Stopping exercise may increase depression symptoms: study

Exercise is a well-known mood booster thanks to the flood of feel-good brain chemicals it releases. A new study has found not only does working out improve your mood, it may prevent depression symptoms. This study from the University of Adelaide’s Discipline of Psychiatry specifically focuses on the cessation of workout regimens and the increase of depression symptoms. The Recommendation

“Adequate physical activity and exercise are important for both physical and mental health,” says PhD student Julie Morgan. “Current public health guidelines recommend being active on most if not all days of the week. At least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week is recommended to maintain health and prevent depression, or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise for added health benefits.

The Study

Morgan reviewed previous studies where 152 adults who had exercised for at least 30 minutes three times a week for at least a minimum of months suddenly stopped.

“In some cases, ceasing this amount of exercise induced significant increases in depressive symptoms after just three days,” says Professor Bernhard Baune, Head of Psychiatry at the University of Adelaide and the study’s senior author. “Other studies showed that people’s depressive symptoms increased after the first one or two weeks, which is still quite soon after stopping their exercise.”

Baune notes more research on this topic is necessary to provide conclusive results and recommends additional trials. However, he points out that “For now, it is important that people understand the potential impact on their mental well-being when they suddenly cease regular exercise.”

Exercise does not have to be “torture”! Simply find something you enjoy, such as swimming, yoga, or bike riding, and aim for physical activity on a daily basis if possible. The more you move, the better you will feel!
