New weight watchers app for children under fire

A new app from Weight Watchers (WW) has garnered harsh criticism for potentially promoting eating disorders in young users. The Kurbo app was released on August 13 and created as “a scientifically-proven behavior change program designed to help kids and teens ages 8-17 reach a healthier weight.” And while maintaining a healthy weight should be a priority for everyone in your family, learn why this app has had its share of critics.

Making Lifestyle Changes”

WW says it was inspired by Stanford University’s Pediatric Weight Control Program designed to help kids and teens “make lifestyle changes while receiving guidance around sustainable healthy eating, physical activity and mindfulness habits.”

Gary Foster, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer at WW, noted in a press release that they app helps “the prevalent public health problem of childhood obesity.”

The Petition

The app has been slammed by parents for promoting unhealthy habits. A petition was even created on to get the app removed.

At least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the U.S.,” the petition read. “Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, every 62 minutes at least one person dies as a direct result from an eating disorder. This app will literally kill people.”

The Better Method

While children are too young to take Phentermine 37.5mg, you can still encourage healthy habits for life by working on weight loss together. Provide healthy snacks, take walks after dinner, and otherwise stay as active as possible. Family biking and swimming outings both burn serious calories, as do hiking activities and trip to the local park featuring plenty of cross-training equipment. Working out as a family also helps everyone stay motivated.
