According to new research published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, mindfulness plays an even bigger role in weight loss than was previously thought. For the study conducted at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire National Health Services Trust in the United Kingdom, half of 53 obese participants involved in a weight loss program were taught mindful eating strategies such as chewing slowly and focusing on their food at every meal instead of assorted distractions. The group who kept up these mindfulness practices lost about three times as much weight as those who were not given the mental health tips.
“This research is significant, as we have shown that problematic eating behavior can be improved with mindfulness application,” Petra Hanson, a research fellow and doctoral student told Medical News Today. “Individuals who completed the course said they were better able to plan meals in advance and felt more confident in self-management of weight loss moving forward.”
