How Genetics Impact Weight Loss and What You Can Do About It

If you are following all the rules for a healthy diet and exercise plan and you’re not seeing results at the same pace as others, your genetics might have something to do with it. Your genetics control many aspects of your overall health, including whether or not you might see quick weight loss while dieting and exercising. Read on to learn more about the impact of genetics on your weight and what you can do about it.

Your Genes and Weight Loss

Your DNA carries genes from your parents and ancestors and impacts your ability to lose weight. Genetic factors can affect the following aspects of your weight-loss journey

  • Feelings of fullness when you eat
  • How fast or slow you burn calories
  • Your body composition
  • Your appetite level
  • The likelihood of developing Type II diabetes

Interventions in Your Diet

If you’re feeling frustrated by seeing slow results from diet and exercise, you can try some specific interventions in your diet to help you overcome genetic predispositions. One effective intervention is to eat as many whole foods as possible throughout the day. Choose foods and dishes that are as close to their natural state as possible, which means avoiding processed, boxed, and frozen foods.

Another intervention you can try is to cut out or greatly reduce your consumption of soda, juice, and alcohol. These extra calories could be making it harder for you to manage your genetics and achieve a healthy weight.

Healthy Lifestyle Changes

While you can’t choose your DNA, you can make healthy lifestyle changes. If going to the gym is not for you, try dance classes or at-home circuit training. Set aside time during the week to cook healthy meals instead of choosing fast-food and overly-processed snacks. Cook food in large batches and freeze extra portions to use when you need a quick bite.

If you’re concerned about how your genetics might make it hard for you to stay healthy, talk to your doctor and a health and fitness expert about how to design an individual weight loss plan that works for you.
