According to a new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, low-to-moderate level physical activities have a major and wonderful impact on your health. One of these activities is gardening, something almost anyone can do regardless of their age or fitness level. If you have been looking for physical activities that will not stress your joints as part of your Phentermine 37.5mg weight loss regimen, read on and learn how gardening will benefit you.
The Study
The study followed a group of more than 88,000 U.S. citizens aged 40 to 85 over an 11-year period. Some participants engaged in 10 to 59 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, such as gardening, dancing, and walking. Their activity level resulted in an 18% lower risk of death, regardless of the cause, while their risk of death from a heart attack or stroke decreased by 12%. Those who did two and a half to five hours per week of moderate physical activity decreased their death risk 31%.
A Light Cardiovascular Workout
Gardening provided participants with a light cardiovascular workout that improved their heart health and weight, as being overweight is directly related to heart attacks and other problems with the major organ.
“The actual motions involved with digging and raking all involve a lot of coordinated upper and lower body movement that actually increases metabolic rate and can get your heart rate a little bit elevated,” Michelle Adams, an instructor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago, told Today Home. “Not at an intense level, but at a nice low to moderate intensity level.”
It is also nearly impossible to garden without squatting! The activity also works large muscles such as the quads and glutes to help you reach your fitness goal.
“In gardening, you need to get down on the earth, you need to plant, you need to pick,” Adams said. “You have to be able to do a squat to be able to garden.
“You’re using the intricate muscles of your feet to balance on uneven ground when you’re working in grass or on mulch or on dirt,” she continued. And, you strengthen the tiny “ligaments that are in your hands from digging or shoveling or holding a rake with a grip, or pushing a lawnmower.”
