Dr. Gardner gave a talk about the best weight loss diets last fall at the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Scientific Sessions annual meeting in New Orleans. His talk included research from 2013 by the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and The Obesity Society. The research featured recommendations on 15 different diets. Consuming Few Calories

According to Gardner, the 15 diets listed in the research work only if fewer calories are ingested. Some diets require a lower caloric intake, while others make no mention of it. Evidence suggests diets result in weight loss if they do not feature “formal prescribed energy restriction” but do include a “realized energy deficit.” This refers to a person not formally attempting to eat few calories, but doing so anyway because of the diet.

“This is the key,” Gardner noted. “What has thwarted us forever is satiety issues.” He also remarked that if you eat fewer calories despite a diet that does not instruct you to, it is probably because you are not hungry.

What To Look For

The right weight loss diet includes a healthy amount of macronutrients to maintain your energy level and prevent diseases from taking hold. The recommendation for adults in regards to daily calories is 45 to 65 percent of calories from carbohydrates, 10 to 35 percent from protein, and 20 to 35 percent from fat. Staying within these ranges keeps you healthy, according to Gardner. Many trendy diets do not fall within these ranges, such as the Atkins diet. The popular diet outlines 50 percent of calories from fat, 30 percent from protein, and 15 percent from carbs.

Another thing most well-known diets do have in common is an emphasis on vegetables and the limiting of sugars and refined grains.
