Resveratrol is one of the main compounds in red wine, an antioxidant that promotes healthy, youthful skin, contributes to cardiovascular health, and is believed to protect against cancer. But is the antioxidant a weight loss tool? Learn what experts have to say about the titular substance.

Most Current Research Concerns Animals

While most research on the link between resveratrol and weight loss revolved around animal studies, health experts are hopeful about the antioxidant’s fitness benefits for people.

“Looking at the research so far, though more is needed, resveratrol has unprecedented promise for improving people’s physical endurance and helping them control their weight,” notes James Smoliga, Ph.D., an associate director at the High Point University Human Biomechanics and Physiology Laboratory in High Point, North Carolina.

Other health and fitness experts echo this sentiment.

“Even though I’m leery when I hear something described as a panacea, I feel very positive about recommending resveratrol because of the research behind it,” says certified trainer Rob Smith.

More Efficient Energy Processing

Currently, the substance shows promise in increasing energy levels to help people train harder and longer.

“When you process energy more efficiently, you increase endurance,” says Smoliga. Research published in a 2006 issue of Cell supports resveratrol as an energizer, noting that it “significantly increases the animal’s [mice’s] resistance to muscle fatigue.”

Sirtuin Stimulation

The antioxidant is also believed to stimulate bodily enzymes called sirtuins that help control fat production among other processes.

“Sirtuins may also increase mitochondria, the powerhouses inside cells where nutrients and oxygen combine to make energy,” says Felipe Sierra, Ph.D., the director of the division of aging biology at the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health. Resveratrol may subsequently be able to put off muscle fatigue for more intense workouts and better overall fitness.

While more research is needed, resveratrol may offer some exciting fitness benefits. Consult your physician before taking it if you are on a Phentermine 375.mg regimen to avoid negative interactions.
