A new study from the University of Illinois at Chicago says daily fasting is an effective way to lose weight and lower blood pressure. The findings were published in the journal Nutrition and Healthy Aging. Learn about this study as part of your newfound Phentermine 37.5mg-driven dedication to weight loss:
Researchers worked with 23 obese individuals with an average age of 45 and an average body max index (BMI) of 35. Participants were allowed to eat whatever they wanted from 10am to 6pm but could only drink water or calorie-free beverages for the other 16 hours of the day over a 12-week period. On average, participants consumed 350 less calories per day, lost about 3% of the body weight, and lowered their blood pressure.
“The take-home message from this study is that there are options for weight loss that do not include calorie counting or eliminating certain foods,” said Krista Varady, associate professor of kinesiology and nutrition in the UIC College of Applied Health Sciences and corresponding author on the study.
The diet has been renamed the 16:8 diet due to 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours of “feasting.”
Better Than Other Diets?
Whether this diet is more effective than other weight loss food plans has yet to be determined.
“The results we saw in this study are similar to the results we’ve seen in other studies on alternate day fasting, another type of diet,” Varady said, “but one of the benefits of the 16:8 diet may be that it is easier for people to maintain. We observed that fewer participants dropped out of this study when compared to studies on other fasting diets.”
“These preliminary data offer promise for the use of time-restricted feeding as a weight loss technique in obese adults, but longer-term, large-scale randomized controlled trials [are required].”
