A new study funded by Weight Watchers has found the partners of those who have lost weight often end up shedding excess pounds. The six-month study focused on 130 couples, all of whom lived together, where one partner was actively trying to lose weight. Losing 3% Of Body Weight Or More
The partners of those who actively diet and exercise lose 3% or more of their body weight according to this new study.
“This study was the first to demonstrate that lifestyle programs for weight loss have effects beyond the person participating in these programs,” said James Hill. He’s professor of pediatrics and medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and a spokesman for The Obesity Society.
The study found the opposite was also true: if one partner had trouble losing weight, so did the other. The “bottom line” is that when one person decided to change his or her behavior, those around the individual also change, whether consciously or not.
“Whether the patient works with their health care provider, joins a community-based, lifestyle approach like Weight Watchers, or tries to lose weight on their own, their new healthy behaviors can benefit others in their lives,” noted Amy Gorin, the study’s lead investigator.
Health Experts Agree
The study, which was published in the Feb. 1 edition of the journal Obesity, was supported by health experts, including Ashley Baumohl, a nutritionist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
“Spouses may change their own habits in response to their partner’s weight-loss goals, and these habits likely explain more of the shared weight loss than the particular weight-loss program used,” Baumohl said.
