Try changing the wording from “cheat” to “treat.” Words such as treat and splurge provide positive connotations.

“Cheat meals are an indication of not being happy with your diet,” added Mascha Davis, a registered dietitian in private practice and national media spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Planning your treat days, such as enjoying some pizza on a Friday or getting a scoop of ice cream after dinner on Sunday, gives you something fun to look forward to. It’s especially helpful if you’ve been eating well and cleanly all week because it breaks up your diet. This avoids the monotony that makes plenty of people give up their diets too soon.

“People who treat themselves are giving themselves permission to eat something they enjoy. … It’s not ‘off’ the plan or ‘bad,’ ” McKittrick says.

Treats Every Day?

Davis suggests providing yourself with portioned treats every day such as an oatmeal cookie or some air-popped popcorn.

“If you love what you eat, you will be able to keep the weight off long-term, and you don’t need to cheat!” she notes.
