Why Long Island Residents Are Losing Weight Despite Quarantine

No Commuting

“I used to commute an hour and a half each way to the city from Long Island. Now that I don’t have that commute, I have more time to exercise,” says Azadeh Aghajani, 37, a Glen Head resident who works as a finance director.

Aghajani started working out in the morning before he daughter woke up and says she has lost seven pounds in addition to feeling happier and healthier. 


“I had nothing else to do,” says Lawrence Sprung, 45, of Smithtown, who started riding his Peloton stationary bike 30 to 60 minutes every day. “My longest streak was for 100 straight days,” he noted. Sprung has lost 10 pounds so far. 

Inspiration From Others

Bonne Soffer, a trainer from Westbury, offers free workout classes on her YouTube channel during the coronavirus. She’s inspired many looking for new ways to fill their days. 

“Sitting indoors is really the enemy,” she says. “People have to tell themselves, ‘No, I won’t go to the refrigerator 15 times today.”

Sprung’s son Jeremy was inspired by his dad’s weight loss journey and started working out. His former favorite hobby was baking. 

“Bread, cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, cookies. I would bake it and then eat it,” he says. “We were lounging around, watching TV and playing Xbox.” 

Jeremy started using weights and resistance bands, losing 30 pounds in the process.
