Two “Crazy” New Weight Loss Tactics: Do They Work & Are They Safe?

Weight loss fads come and go, with some healthy and others simply dangerous. If you want to drop unwanted pounds, it is best to eat a nutritious and balanced diet, exercise, and take Phentermine 37.5mg, the natural appetite suppressant that eventually results in a shrunken stomach. Review the following “crazy” new weight loss tactics, both of which you should avoid!

Gastric Balloon

This expensive procedure requires placing a silicone balloon in your stomach using a tube. You can also swallow the balloon in a pill attached to a small catheter. The balloon inflates in your stomach to about the size of a grapefruit.

“It’s sort of like eating a big Thanksgiving dinner, and the ‘Thanksgiving full’ feeling doesn’t leave your stomach,” says Vladimir Kushnir, M.D., director of bariatric endoscopy at Washington University in St. Louis.

The balloon causes side effects such as nausea, cramping, vomiting, and discomfort. It is also essential to avoid getting “punched in the gut.” What’s more, the balloon can cause the stomach lining to atrophy or the stomach to rupture.

Coolsculpting involves pressing two cool plates connected to a vacuum over a “problem” area. The idea is to freeze cells to promote apoptosis, or cell death. It takes two or three months for the body to rid the problem area of fat cells–whether they simply move to another part of the body remains unclear. It is not an invasive technique, but it does present several problems.

“As far as getting rid of the fat that’s dangerous to your health, it does nothing,” says Michael Roizen, M.D., chair of the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute.

Infection is also a possibility.

“Think of it as frostbite, but on purpose and internally,” says David Katz, M.D., director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center. “Cellular debris like that undermines the inner barriers that prevent bacteria from getting into places they don’t belong.”

The fat could also return–another reason to skip this technique.

Other questionable weight loss techniques include vaping and stomach draining.
