More Than Exercise
Researchers wanted to find out if taking 10,000 or more steps a day helped freshman college students avoid weight gain. Despite taking upwards of 15,000 steps a day, the students still gained weight during their first year of college.
"Exercise alone is not always the most effective way to lose weight," said lead author Bruce Bailey, professor of exercise science at BYU. "If you track steps, it might have a benefit in increasing physical activity, but our study showed it won't translate into maintaining weight or preventing weight gain."
Still Has Positive Benefits
Study authors noted that increasing daily step count still "may have other emotional and health benefits," even if weight loss is not one of them. Students decreased their sedentary time by up to 77 steps per day.
"The biggest benefit of step recommendations is getting people out of a sedentary lifestyle," Bailey. "Even though it won't prevent weight gain on its own, more steps is always better for you."
Students and everyone else looking to increase their physical activity should follow a healthy diet comprised mainly of whole foods, including fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.
