Calories Are Not Created Equal
Over 600 overweight adults were divided into two groups for this study: low-fat and low-carb. They were asked to reduce their daily caloric intake by 500 calories. While which group the participants were assigned to did not affect the results, what did change the outcomes was the type of carbs and fat consumed. Those who ate the most vegetables lost considerably more weight than those who consumed sugary and processed foods and drinks.
“If you reduce starch and sugar and you increase minimally processed healthful foods like vegetables, weight will go down naturally,” said Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and nutrition expert at Tufts University. “About 10 pounds a year, which is pretty substantial.”
Mozaffarian is not connected with this study and questions the idea that “all carbs are bad.”
“The carbs that we should be avoiding are those that come in high doses and are digested very quickly, what you might call fast carbs,” he says. The cardiologist recommends ridding your kitchen of white flour and sugar and adding plenty of beans, fruits, and whole grains.
Personalization Is Key
One of the numerous takeaways from this study is the customization aspect.
