More Protein+Fewer Calories Safe Weight Loss In Older Adults

A new randomized, controlled trial from Wake Forest University found low-calorie, high-protein diets help older obese individuals shed pounds safely. Safe Weight Loss For Seniors

Weight loss for seniors can be problematic due to muscle and bone loss issues. The study worked with 96 older obese adults and divided them into two groups. One group went on a six-month low-calorie meal plan that included “more than 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, plus adequate calcium and vitamin D.” The other group ate .8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, or the current dietary allowance recommended by the federal government.

"Doctors hesitate to recommend weight loss for fear that losing muscle and bone could cause mobility issues or increase the risk of injury," said Beavers, assistant professor of health and exercise science at Wake Forest and principal investigator of this study. "This study suggests that a diet high in protein and low in calories can give seniors the health benefits of weight loss while keeping the muscle and bone they need for better quality of life as they age."

The Results

Researchers found participants on high-protein, low-calorie diets lost about 18 pounds, most of which was from fat. They preserved muscle and bone mass while improving their scores on the Healthy Aging index. Participants mainly lost weight in the buttocks, stomach, thighs, and hips to control or prevent cardiometabolic diseases such as stroke and diabetes.
