New research published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.suggests keeping the television off while you eat dinner or any other meal reduces the risk of obesity in adults. She is survey and population health analyst manager at the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center at Ohio State University.

“This highlights the importance of thinking critically about what is going on during those meals, and whether there might be opportunities to turn the TV off or do more of your own food preparation,” said Tumin, who worked on the study as a doctoral student.

The researchers found those who ate home-cooked meals without the television on enjoyed the lowest risk of obesity. Doing so also benefits emotional and mental health, as family members engage with each other more instead of sitting in front of the TV and not talking.
