“Healthy Competition” Provides The Motivation To Exercise More According To New Study

Researchers asked 800 people to sign up for an exercise plan entitled ‘PennShape.’ The plan included a social media site, with participants split into four groups to see how “different levels of social interaction” affected exercise levels. The groups were named ‘Individual Competition,’ ‘Team Competition,’ ‘Team Support,’ and ‘Control Group.’ Participants in the individual group were shown the progress of anonymous team members, while those in team groups could see the leader boards of fellow teams. The social media platform also allowed them to chat and motivate each other.

The Results

Gym attendance was 90 percent higher among participants in competitive groups over the controlled group because the competition fueled their exercise goals. The controlled group was rewarded based on individual workout success.

“Competitive groups frame relationships in terms of goal-setting by the most active members,” wrote senior study author Damon Centola. “These relationships help to motivate exercise because they give people higher expectations for their own levels of performance.”
