Doesn’t Help When You’re Really Hungry
“What we consistently found in this study was that when people were hungry, the plate had much less of an effect on their perception of size,” Tzvi Ganel, study co-author and head of the laboratory for Visual Perception and Action at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, told TODAY.
Researchers conducted the study in light of the Delboeuf illusion, or when the human mind believes things are bigger or smaller depending on what size objects they are placed in. Some participants were asked to eat right before participating in the study, while others were asked to avoid food for three hours prior. Participants then looked at food and non-food items on circles of various sizes.
While the illusion worked on non-food items, it had no bearing on the food images. The hungry participants were “less distracted by the surrounding context” when they were looking at the food. This is because the brain judges things more precisely when it is in survival mode, such as during periods of hunger.
Can Still Use Smaller Plates
You can still use smaller plates as weight loss tools, but they may not have the effect you want.
“Unfortunately, plate size may not matter as much as we once thought it did,” said Charlotte Markey, an author and psychology professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey, told TODAY.
“Although, to be fair, if your plate is too small to hold too much food and you are disinclined or unable to get seconds, it does offer some sort of restraint.”
