Can Weighted Vests Lower Obesity Rates?

A new study from the University of Gothenburg discusses a potential new way to reduce fat mass and body weight. Researchers loaded vests with weights and provided them to 69 people aged 30 to 35 in the obesity range, which they wore eight hours per day for three weeks. The Effects Of Heavier Vests

Some participants wore vests weighing 24 pounds, while others donned lighter vests weighing two pounds. Those wearing heavier vests lost more weight than those in lighter vests; however, other study results surprised the researchers. 

"We think it's very interesting that the treatment with the heavier weighted vests reduced fat mass while muscle mass simultaneously remained intact," says Professor Claes Ohlsson of Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

"The effect on fat mass we found, from this short experiment, exceeded what's usually observed after various forms of physical training. But we weren't able to determine whether the reduction was in subcutaneous fat (just under the skin) or the dangerous visceral kind (belly fat) in the abdominal cavity that's most strongly associated with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes," says Professor John-Olov Jansson of Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

The Gravitostat Factor

Previous studies have found the body uses an energy balance system that attempts to keep the form “gravitostat.” A type of “personal weighing machine,” this bodily regulation system is believed to influence appetite. However, when people sit a lot, this personal scale lowers, which provides a possible link between sitting and obesity. Weighted vests can raise these scale readings to help with weight loss.

Researchers continue to explore the gravitostat concept in relation to weighted vests, including changes in mobility and energy expenditure as well as appetite. They also want to learn whether weight loss continues in those who wear the vests for longer than three weeks, and if the vests have any impact on visceral (belly) fat.
